Mentsikhang

The Medical and Astrological Institute (sman rtsis khang), located just to the west of Tengyé Ling monastery in Lhasa, was established in 1916 by the Thirteenth Dalai Lama Tupten Gyatso (thub bstan rgya mtsho, 1876-1933). The institute was to serve as a college for Tibetan doctors who could then go out and serve communities across Tibet. The original structure survives and still functions as a medical institute under the Health Bureau of the Tibetan Autonomous Region and a new, larger addition has been built on the west side.
