Kyidchu

The village surrounding the oldest temple in Bhutan, known as Kyidchu Lhakhang is known as Kyidchu derived from the name of the temple. The temple was built in the 7th century by Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo among the 108 temples he built on the stretigic location of the landscape which looked like a demon sleeping on her back. In the 12th century the temple was looked after by the linage holders of Lhapa Kaguye who extended the temple. Later in 13th century the Drukpa Kagyue school took over the temple.
