Wangthang Goenpa

The place was first founded by 16th Karmapa after which a monastery was founded by Lama Yeshi Dorji who came from Tibet. He was later widely known as the Wangthang rinpoche. The place wangthang means the plain area within the forest of fir trees in local term. After Wangthang rinpoche established a monastery, men from Ura became his students where Wangthang became a Gomdhey with lay monks studying under him. Today the monastery is looked after by the Ura community and is used as a hermitage area for those who go for retreat and meditation.
