Chagri Monastery

Chagri Monastery was the first monastery established in Bhutan by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1620 when he was about 27 years old. He spent several years in strict retreat in a cave at Chagri, which is the first hermitage in this place. Located on the slope of a rocky mountain not far from Tango, it serves as the main retreat center for the monks of Bhutan’s State Monk Body.
