The school was started in 1965 by His Majesty the third king with classes from Kindergarten to four. In 1976, Thimphu Public School was renamed to Yangchenphug Central School, a decade later it became Yangchepnhug High School.Untill it became a day scholar school in 1994, Yangchengphug had a border fecility. Since 2001, the school was upgraded and was called Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School with classes till 12. Many royal figures including the present king stuided their high school in this school.
