Located at the back side of the Sumthrang temple, the crematoruim was founded by Sumthrang Choje Palden Zangpo. Before he died, he instructed his followers to cremate his own physical remains on a stone slab at this location to establish a crematorium. It was said that the shape of a footprint appeared in the centre of the stone slab after he was cremated. He had said that anyone whose physical remains are cremated on this stone slab would not be born in the three bad realms. The stone slab is used as the floor of the crematory oven today. Locals say that the area of the footprint remains cold even after a day-long fire has burned for cremations.
