The western part of the Sumthrang cliff is also a place where hermitages are pitched for practice and retreat. At the left side of the hermitage on the western cliff are the ruins of a retreat centre. The yak-herders of Sumthrang have a grazing land on top of the western cliff. On the way to the hermitage, a rock face believed to be a treasure-casket of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) can also be seen with a seal believed to be his thumbprint.
