The lama estate of the Demo line of incarnate lamas from Loselling College of Drepung Monastery, just northwest of Lhasa, this compound was located northwest of the Jokhang. The sixth incarnation in the Demo line served as regent for the sixth Dalai Lama, the seventh Demo lama served as both regent for and tutor of the eighth Dalai Lama, and the eighth Demo lama served as regent for the thirteenth Dalai Lama. Around 1760, the eighth Demo lama founded Tengyeling Monastery just to the south of Demo Labrang. The eighth Demo lama later came into conflict with the thirteenth Dalai Lama, who then took over Tengyeling.
