The Jebum Chökhang (rje 'bum mchod khang) is located directly north of the Jokhang (jo khang) in Lhasa near the intersection of Beijing East Road and Ramoché Road. The temple was built in the 1890s by the regent (sde srid) of Tibet, the Ninth Demo Rinpoché (1855-1899). It was built on the site of an earlier monument, a stūpa containing 100,000 small clay figurines of Jé Tsongkhapa (rje tsong kha pa, 1357-1419). When the stūpa collapsed, a new structure, the Jebum Chökhang, was built to house the figurines. The Thirteenth Dalai Lama (1876-1933) had the temple renovated and placed it under the care of Namgyel (rnam rgyal) monastery. After 1959, the building was given over to the Lhasa Grain Department, which uses it to store grain.
