Ramoché
The Ramoché temple (ra mo che gtsug lag khang) is on the northern edge of Lhasa's central old town. It dates back to the time of the Tibetan empire, and is said to have been built shortly after the arrival in Lhasa of Songtsen Gampo's (srong btsan sgam po) Chinese wife, Wencheng. In subsequent centuries, other features and buildings were gradually added to the temple and the Ramoché became a sprawling temple complex. Around 1485, Künga Döndrup (kun dga' don grub, 1419-1486) made the Ramoché home to the Gyütö (rgyud stod) Tantric College. In the seventeenth century, the Fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682) extensively renovated the temple. After 1959, the temple was used for various non-religious purposes until being reopened as a temple in 1985.
